Working together for gender equality in the arts.

A look at exhibitions and collections in arts institutions – in Berlin and across Germany – shows that women artists are under-represented. Their voices, perspectives and works are missing. We want to provide momentum for change in the current situation and make progress visible. Together with museums, galleries and exhibition venues, we aim to create transparency and raise awareness of gender equality in the art world.

Exhibition venues and museums want to showcase more women artists – but how can this be achieved? What role do alliances and partnerships play? And why is cultural policy essential in this context?

Exhibition venues and museums want to showcase more women artists – but how can this be achieved? What role do alliances and partnerships play? And why is cultural policy essential in this context?

In our new podcast “Make it happen! Art Needs Equality*”, curators and directors discuss acquisitions despite tight budgets, new curatorial approaches, international collaborations, cultural journalism and the question of how art-historical narratives can be transformed in the long term.

The podcast brings together ideas and important voices from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, NRW, Berlin, Leipzig and Paris. Listen now – here or wherever you get your podcasts!

Make it happen! Art Needs Equality* Symposium (2025) Berlin

With the symposium Make it happen! Art Needs Equality*, held on 21 November at Haus Bastian, the Centre for Cultural Education of the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, we brought together numerous representatives from the arts, culture and cultural policy. Under the central question “How can equality be achieved in the art world – actively, structurally, and with a future-oriented approach?”, the panellists and the audience exchanged ideas. The positive response and the stimulating discussions confirm the relevance of the issue and the pressing need for action to strengthen the visibility of women artists, right up to parity.

Keynotes, panel contributions and roundtable discussions presented good practices from Frankfurt, North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin, Leipzig and Paris, as well as case studies from Norway and elsewhere. Curatorial strategies and latest measures aimed at strengthening the positions of women artists in institutions

Symposium speakers:

Now it is time to build on these new ideas: the fair share! team is continuing its work on this basis, with the aim of involving further stakeholders and making the symposium’s findings accessible to a wider audience. Make it happen!

Development of an Award to recognize Art Institutions' Efforts

in Implementing Gender Parity

To strengthen the transition to contemporary and forward-looking standards of gender equality in art institutions, fair share! has launched a multi-stage, participatory initiative.

The aim is to recognise stakeholders and representatives from public and private museum and exhibition sectors, as well as galleries, who are committed to working towards gender-equitable structures and projects, with a certificate.

Together with all participants, we want to provide impetus, promote empowerment, strengthen participation and set benchmarks for gender equality in the cultural landscape.

On 7 and 8 November 2024, at Future Lab 1.0, we engaged in intensive discussions with experts from professional associations, initiatives, exhibition venues and galleries on best practices, criteria, concepts, design and perspectives regarding award tools for a gender-equitable and parity-based art sector.
